MAHASHA COMMUNITY IN PUNJAB

DOM TO MAHASHA A CONVERSION IN PUNJAB
" Shuddhi prachar, education and social uplifement remained the only effective methods for the protection of urban Hindus and the broader religious community.after fifty years of history many Hindus held hierarchy  of identities." ARYA DHARAM: HINDU CONSCIOUSNESS IN 19TH CENTURY PUNJAB ; WRITTEN BY KENNETH .W.JONES.
T he congress and the Punjab hindu Shaba both appeared inpotent and irrelevant ,unable to combat the most pressing single proplen facing punjabi hindus the dercline in status and number of their community..KHANDAN,MANDAN AND SHUDDHI and education were the blended together as an antidote for the great overriding fdear of numerical decline and the inevitable destr active of the hindu race.
Shuddhi campaigns organised between 1900-1903 among rahtion ,odes and meghs was sucessfull .This lead Aryas toward increased use of shuddhi they were opposed by Hindus Orthodox's or non Hindu leaders. In 1905 sukkus arya samaj of sindh began purification of SHEKHS OF LARKANA-LOW caste muslims and reclaimed them to hinduism.during 1907 -10 RAJPUTS  who had converted to Islam were brought back to Hinduism after shuddhi.

In 1912 Sh RAMBHAJ DUTT CHAUDHARY  President of All India Shuddhi Sahaba  also associated with Punjab Hindu Conference and Hindu sabha started shuddhi process in Gurdaspur  Punjab. He was the first person who sacrifice his whole life for the low caste people of punjab According to him during 1901-10 near about 60 -70 thousand dom community people were converted after shuddhi process He converted near about five lakh people of punjab and bring back them to the mainstream of Hinduism. He traveled from village to village with Aryas preaching and performing shuddhi process when ever it was possible.During 1912 Aryas reported success in the purification of Doms who at least nominally were raised to the level of pure caste-Hindus.
Sh PURAN CHAND  a freedom fighter from gurdaspur and dom by caste opposed the shuddhi movement he believes that it was a tricky method devised by the Aryas samaj to deal with treath opposed by the Christianity. The untouchables were converting to the other religions to find their identity, but the contribution of Arya samaj  to the upliftment of the untouchables cannot be ignored, be it little."SATIS KUMAR SHARAMA ...SOCIAL MOVEMENTS  AND SOCIAL CHANGE (PAGE 105 B.R PUBLISHING CORPORATION DELHI 1985)
MAHASHA KOMI SABHA was trying from many years to build RAM BHAJ DUIT VED BHAWAN in Awankha Dinanagar but due to lack of funds it was not possible .So on 28 feb 1938  on the annual meeting of sabha SH SAT PAL  JI "ARYA BHIKSHU" took pledge to complete the VED BHAWAN in a year in the memory of his guru Sh Ram bhaj dutt. Sh sat pal ji belongs to village SINGOWAL  near Dinanagar Sh sat pal ji left his home and took pledge that he will eat only one time in a day and live bare foot and head and will not visit his village and meet his family until the bhawan is completed  He meet Pandit Jawahar lal Nehru and many other leaders for raising the funds to complete the Ved Bhawan at that time the estimated cost to built the Bhawan was near about 10000 rs .Due to the efforts of Sh Sat Pal Ji in 16 july 1938 the foundation stone of Ved Bhawan was layed down by Smt Kasturba Gandhi wife of Sh Mathama Gandhi in the presence of thousands of mahasha community people and RAJA BALDEO DAS JI BIRLA  donated money to complete  the bhawan.
RAJA BALDEO DAS BIRLA ---son of sh Shiv Narain descendants of seth Shobram member of Maheshwari  marwari community from pilani Rajasthan --was awarded the title of Raja by the then govt of bihar and orissa..

MAHASHA CASTE IN PUNJAB

The word DOM is widely used for people having common cultural tradition in South Asia and other parts of the world.DOM is widely used ethnic term in south Asia and other parts of the world.Dom is not a caste but their historical presence suggest that they are a large scale tribe which is conversely called a “race”historians has noted that their presence in 2nd century BCE.Persian scholar AL BRUNEI noted that Dom in India fall in the lowest class of Indian society. The occupation of Dom people was to sing and dance.ABU SA ID GARDENI  Persian scholar has described Dom as “black skinned” people who played string instruments and dance, they were the untouchable people of the society. In south Asia the occupation of Dom people is different in each country and state.Their main occupation was singing, dancing, scavengers, execution, basket maker, black smiths, weavers etc. as these work was considered menial. The Dom people was considered as low caste untouchables people.
Dom is universally low caste status people. In Punjab,Jammu and Himachal Pardesh Dom constitute a fairly distinct group, largely known as DUM,they are hereditary musicians, bards, genealogists, basket makers but the phenomena of DOM people as musicians is widely spread. As the time past their work of musicians was overlapped with other occoupations such as tailors, barber, basket makers etc we can say that they are the jack of several trades.Descendants of “Dum “divided into several sub castes in Punjab,Himachal and jammu but we Dum are unaware of this and in many places we are still considered as untouchables. The three major community to which we are divided are jogi, mahasha and mirasi

DOM IN MIDDLE EAST COUNTRIES

The term GYPSY is used nomadic people of Europe and N.America of Hindu origin. In India they are called DOM and in Europe ROM.In middle east Africa they are called DOM.Originally Dom scattered from India to the rest of world. The only written records can be collected from the annals of kings and the ancient historians.according to Dr.Donalad Kenrick they first moved from India to Persia. The prince of Persia ,Ardashir conquered India in 227AD during the reign of Bahran Gur,he took many DOM people to Persia along with him to work as musicians and dancers.Persian poet Firdusi has written in his book  Shahname about this.Bahran Gur 8,the king of Iran came to know about these gypsy's in India and he himself want to see them,so he wrote a letter to the ruler of India and asked him to send few families of Dom community to his country. The ruler of India sent him 400 families of DOM by boat to Iran  on their arrival the king of Iran greeted them and give them land and grains and asked them to start cultivation He motivated them to become an agriculturist he came back after few days to see them but he found that they all were singing and dancing .The king get angry and he threw them out of Iran, they went to Mosul,Kirkuk and suleinaniyya and spread around and settled there as the time pass their population grew. When Salah Al Din Al Ayyoubi conquered Arabian peninsula - Iraq, Mosal and moved towards Syria and Lebanon he took some people of this community with him.In this way DOM people spread to these countries some of them settled in Palestine,Syria,Turkey etc.
In Arab countries DOM people accepted Islam religion at that time they did not understand the rituals of Islam and the cultural of that countries but they did not care much about the religion. They speak "aspur" language but the majority of them started speaking Arabic. Their main work was tinker, engravers etc but arab people call them as thieves. Most of them are singers dancers and they perform street dancing and perform in streets during festivals and celebrations
Dom can be seen in middle east countries such as Iran,Iraq Gaza etc as the time past they adopted the language of that countries to which they migrated .They also speak Domari language.Nawari is often used as synonyms of Domari which is a dialect language of Arabic language.Dom adopted different kind of work such as black smith, basket maker weavers etc..In Jordan they started cultivation,in the middle east they are shepherds.DOM are generally know as low caste people, in middle east  Arbic countries they adopted Islam and their main work is craftsman, peddlers etc..They settled in Israel, Lebanon and Cyprus..    .

  1. I am the grandnephew of Pandit Rambhaj Dutt Choudhary and written article on Panditji. I am posting few lines from my article.Pandit Rambhaj Dutt Choudhary was great social reformers, freedom fighter, Gandhian and arya samajist. He was the voice of depressed class of Indian society.

“I had a Punjabi friend, Rambhaj Dutt Choudhary, who is now no more. Sometimes he composed poems. When he came out of jail he brought along a poem he had composed, and since he himself could not sing he asked his wife Sarala to sing it. In her melodious voice Sarala sang: “Never admit defeat even if you should lose life.” And I told myself that I would never accept defeat” - Gandhi Ji Speech at prayer meeting in Delhi on June 13, 1947.

Pandit Rambhaj Dutt Choudhary did a lot of social work as well for the depressed classes of Punjab province. He is remembered by these people even today and since 1932 his birthday is celebrated as a mark of respect and recognition. Shri Jagjivan Ram and many others national leaders graced the function of his birthday celebration in Gurdaspur District. Moreover the people of depressed classes of Gurdaspur district still regard him as their Guru. A memorial (Pandit Rambhaj Dutt Veda Shala) was also setup by late Shri B D Birla. The foundation stone of this memorial was laid down by Smt. Kasturba Gandhi, wife of Mahatma Gandhi, near Awankha (Gurdaspur).

  3. Reminiscence of Rambhaj Dutt
Pandit Rambhaj Dutt Choudhary visited Bombay in April, 1920 and stayed with Mahatma Gandhi. On 19th April 1920, Gurdit Singh Sarhil managed to see Pandit Rambhaj Dutt Choudhary alone. Still refusing to say who he was, he got his point quickly, attacking Motilal Nehru for saying that the passengers at Budge Budge had lost their temper and violated the law. “The innocent passengers of Kamagata Maru were the aggrieved party,” he told Choudhary. “They remained calm up to the time of their death by a shower of bullets.”
Rambhaj Dutt Choudhary observed that Nehru had merely repeated what the official Kamagata Maru Inquiry Committee had reported. Gurdit Singh of Kamagata Maru and Pandit Rambhaj Dutt Choudhary had the following conversation at Bombay.
Gurdit Singh: “You have most probably read the report on Jalllianwalla Bagh in which it is mentioned that only 290 people were dead. Is that true?”
Rambhaj Dutt Choudhary: “It is absolutely false. The Government has been suppressing the truth.”
Gurdit Singh: “Sir how do you believe the Kamagata Maru Inquiry Committee?”
Rambhaj Dutt Choudhary: “The comparison with the Jallianwalla Bagh report has a strong point. “Do you know the fact by guess or actual knowledge?, “Gurdit
Singh is still living and can tell the whole story.” “If he is alive, can he come to me?”
Gurdit Singh: “Yes, Panditji, he is alive and whenever you will send for him he will come to you”.
Rambhaj Dutt Choudhary: “I want to see him today if possible, if not, as soon as he can”
Gurdit Singh: “If Gurdit Singh just now comes to you, how will you recognize him?”
Rambhaj Dutt Choudhary: “Yes, I shall be able to recognize him through my heart.”
Gurdit Singh: “I am the unfortunate always at your service”
Rambhaj Dutt Choudhary: “Yes, you are the one of the fortunate sufferers. But where is Gurdit Singh.”
Gurdit Singh: “I am Gurdit Singh before you.”

It is a matter of great concern that a person who was champion of freedom struggle, upliftment of weaker section and social reformer has no suitable memorial by Govt of India and Govt of Punjab. It was Panditji who had inspired many to jump into the freedom movement. He was the great social reformer who sacrified his life for the upliftment of depressed classes in undivided Punjab. It was Panditji who demanded special status to the Punjab on the line of Bangal & Madras.

  5. Speech by M K Gandhi
    At A. I. C. C.
    BOMBAY,
    July 7, 1946

Shri Jayaprakash Narayan said yesterday that it would be dangerous to participate in the proposed Constituent Assembly and therefore they should reject the Working Committee’s resolution. I was not prepared to hear such defeatist language from the lips of a tried fighter like Jayaprakash. One line from a song composed by the late Choudhary Rambhaj Dutt has always made a very deep appeal to me. It means: “We will never be defeated—nay, not even in death.” That is the spirit in which I expect you to approach this resolution. A satyagrahi knows no defeat…………..

  8. Speech on the Swadeshi movement
    By Pt. Rambhaj Dutt Choudhary

In the Punjab the movement is about 25 years old, in Bombay 30 years and in Bengal, if not more, at least 20 years old and so in Madras and the United Provinces. The Arya Samaj has been trying its best towards the same end. A fair number of other Hindu and Mohammedan, sectarian and non - sectarian associations have, with this as their only object or one of the objects, been working for many years. There are any number of Government officials and others working in the movement and no one ever dreamt that after so long a time the Government would wake up and call them “seditionists “.The Swadeshi movement is not a political movement though the boycott movement is essentially so. The boycott is a protest against the iniquitous attempt on the part of the Government to separate brother from brother. It is certainly a declaration of a sincere resolve of the Bengali mind that it will not suffer and will not allow the partition to last long. They have not only challenged the wisdom but have defied the action of the Government. They refuse to recognize the right of a Government to disunite a loving and a living people for ever. We see with awe and wonder the great and Successful straggle the Bengalis are making in keeping the unity and honor of the Bengali- speaking race intact.

The Swadeshi movement is essentially a non- political movement. It has nothing to do with the Government: be it Liberal or Conservative, be Lord Curzon the Viceroy or Lord Minto,-in fact whether the English rule India or the German, and the Sovereign be Christian or Mohammedan It is a Self-government of the people by the people in matters where the Government has no jurisdiction. It involves no relationship between the Government and the people. Its foundations" are as strong and deep-rooted, as the sentiments of self-Iove and self- preservation are in the human soul. Self-reliance and self-respect are the immediate results of this great mental, moral and physical upheaval of the nation. They are the essentials, the inseparable incidents of the awakening of the self-consciousness of a nation.

  9. Times of India, 29th May 1919.
Gandhiji gives Evidence in the trial case of
Lala Harkishanlal, Pt Rambhaj Dutt Chowdhary & others.

At the Esplanade Police Court, Bombay on Wednesday, before Mr. A. H. S. Aston, Chief Presidency Magistrate, Mr, M. K. Gandhi was examined on Commission as a witness in the case in which Lala Harkishanlal, Rambhaj Dutt Chowdhary, and others are being tried at Lahore on charges of conspiracy etc., under section 121, 124 and 124-A of the Indian Penal Code. Mr. Gandhi said " he was fifty years old and was a farmer by occupation. He lived at Sabarmati, Ahmedabad. It was not true that he was in anyway concerned with the alleged conspiracy. He thought he had met Pandit Rambhaj Dutt Chowdhary once or twice in his life. That was only on the occasion of the Kumbha Mela at Haradwar about two years ago. Chowdhary wrote to him once almost after the Kumbha Mela at Haradwar inviting him to go to the Punjab, and if he did so, offering him his hospitality. It was not true that he and Chowdhary met each other on the 1st January 1919. To his knowledge the disturbances in the Punjab had nothing to do with his Satyagraha Movement.

  17. todays mahasha community is respected every where. Qnce a time as it is said when mughals ruled over india . They tried to convert hindus to muslims . At that time brahmins were regarded as god . They gave education of vedas, arms and religoin . Some people from hindus did not accept their teachings The ruler section of the society with the help of pandits excommuniticated from the societyand refused to put them janeu .After that those hindus began to live anuncivilized life . Some of them were went to jungle they started to live in tribes .They started to eat meat fruits and totally cut off from the society .They began to live jhunds .Whenever they faced any danger they attacked over the enemy like Domna ( Madhu Makhi ) .They were very skilled in fights . As the time passed people began to say them dom . The is not any community . It is a name ginven by people .Astime passed these doms were converted into Mahasha by the kind efforts PT Ram Bhaj Dut . Thats why the subcastes of mahashas is related to rajputs , brahmins and other castes like rana ,katel ,lalotra ,gor ,chawla ,malhotra , chandel, kalotra, mangotra , salgotra, saniyaal chingotra ,rabgotra, pandotra etc . some of our anncestors adopted muslim religion . Bhai Mardana is also our ancestor . Mashasha can also be said the decendant of Bhai Mardana . Thatswhy people of our community is welknown music directors, actors,
